Should You Replace Your AC?
Air conditioning units seem to fail at the worse times of year. It will be one of the hottest weeks of the summer and then all of a sudden the AC will stop working. This is a common problem and something you probably want fixed as quickly as possible. Most people do not want to wait the number of days it takes for a HVAC technician to arrive, so this article will give you some tips on how to repair the most common causes to a AC failure.
Some of the benefits of fixing your own unit is that will save you a great deal of money. A lot of HVAC companies will charge you, just to come out an look at the problem. Add that to actually fixing the problem and you will spend a few hundred dollars to have your system working again. If you have a simple fix, you should be able to do it yourself and only spend about 50 to 100 hundred dollars on parts.
Checking Out the Fans
The first thing you will want to do in order to troubleshoot your AC unit is to set the thermostat to the air conditioning mode and put it on the lowest setting. When you do this, listen to see if the fan turns on, if it does then you do not have a problem with your furnace. If the fan does not turn of try to reset the circuit breakers, and test again. If the fan will still not turn on then you may have to call a HVAC technician to come fix the problem.
You will then want to check the HVAC unit outside to see if those fans are running as well. If that fan is not running, you can usually buy a new condenser fan for around $175. These are not to hard to replace and you can find multiple videos on YouTube on how to replace them. Just be sure to turn off all the the breakers connecting to the A/C and furnace before you start to repair the unit.
Fixing a HVAC unit yourself will save you money, since you will only have to pay for the parts to fix the unit. You must be comfortable around electrical units and know common safety procedures, before you begin any work. If you are not up for the job, you can always call a certified HVAC tech to fix the problem for you.
